But if you apply for certain cards, you may receive an instant card number, allowing you to complete purchases right after approval. Instant credit cards are a great way to pay for unexpected expenses or new transactions without checking the mail everyday for your card.
All Amex cards have the ability to receive an instant card number once your identity is validated. If you're approved for a card and are eligible for instant access, you'll receive your card number, temporary four-digit card identification number and expiration date that allows you to use the card anywhere American Express is accepted.
Store cards can only be used at the retailer, but co-branded cards can be used anywhere the card is accepted. However, a temporary co-branded store card might only be accepted at the store, as is the case with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. You'll have to wait to use the card elsewhere until it arrives in the mail.
As you'll notice from the cards mentioned above, instant card numbers primarily come with Amex cards, co-branded cards and store cards. That leaves out many major card issuers, such as Discover and Chase, so you'll have to wait roughly 10 business days to receive those cards in the mail before being able to use them.
Keep in mind, if you request faster shipment, you may have to pay a fee. Before submitting your request, consider whether you really need the card ASAP and whether the fee is worthwhile. If it's not, you can simply wait for it to arrive in the mail.
If you carry credit card balances month to month, paying off that debt fast might be easier than you think. The key is developing a good plan and sticking to it. These four strategies can help you decide which course to take to quickly pay off any credit card debt.
Consolidating your debt lets you combine several higher-interest balances into one with a lower rate, so you can pay down your debt faster without increasing payment amounts. Here are two common ways to consolidate debt:
Take advantage of a low balance transfer rate to move debt off high-interest cards. Be aware that balance transfer fees are often 3 to 5 percent, but the savings from the lower interest rate may often be greater than the transfer fee. Always factor that in when considering this option.
If you have equity in your home, you may be able to use it to pay down card debt. A home equity line of credit may offer a lower rate than what your cards charge. Be aware that closing costs often apply.
Luckily, there are several credit cards that allow you to instantly access all the important information you need to use your new credit card immediately to make an important purchase.
NOTE: Not all applicants for Capital One cards are able to access immediate card numbers instantly on approval. If this aspect is important to you, and your credit is good, applying for an American Express card may be a better alternative.
Bottom Line: Having good credit increases your options for cards that offer instant approval and subsequently having immediate access to your card information, which allows you to use your card immediately.
The eBay and Paypal credit cards can also provide you with instant access to your card number, but their use may be limited to online purchases only. There may also be a limited credit line until you actually receive your physical card.
Bottom Line: Many popular retail stores offer their own branded credit card. Some are even issued through Visa, Mastercard, and American Express networks and can be used anywhere that network of cards is accepted, while others are limited to use only at that specific affiliated store.
While store-branded credit cards may be easier to obtain, if you have good credit you may want to consider a credit card that earns rewards on all of your major purchases, is widely accepted, and offers additional benefits you can use.
I like credit cards that give me a good percent of cash back. I use them everywhere and at the end of the year, I get refunded a percent of what I spent. Usually, with my current card, I get about $250 back every year.
We explain what you need to know about instant approval credit cards, including what types of credit cards offer them and how to increase your chances of being approved (instead of rejected) for that new card.
Another common type of instant approval credit card is a store credit card. Many retail cards provide instant approvals at the point of sale. So when you check out at a retailer, such as Home Depot, you may be asked to apply for a The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card on the spot.
American Express offers this feature for all of its consumer cards, including the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express, Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card and The Amex EveryDay Credit Card from American Express.
With instant approval credit cards, you can usually receive an approval, denial or request for more information response within minutes of submitting your card application. If the issuer requests additional information from you, it may take several days to evaluate your application.
We should note, instant approval credit cards are typically designed for individuals with good to excellent credit. Therefore, the higher your credit score, the better your chances are of being approved for an instant approval credit card.
